This is a lighting arc made by animating the vertices of a straight line mesh through a vertex shader. Multiple sine waves are stacked on top of one another and offset in the y and z directions. This effect is fast and efficient due to not using any particle systems of standard mesh animation.

The electric discharges were made to look realistic and similar to a Tesla coil effect. There are multiple parameters that are used to customize the discharges and the discharges themselves can be positioned in the scene as desired. You can also easily make real lightnings from the sky with these objects.
