  1. hey, I just got linked to this compo and I’m very interested in taking part but I have a couple of questions:

“The winner is required to work with Muse Games to bring the game to completion.”

presumably this is unpaid work yes? and if so, what would you deem to be ‘completion’ as alot of concepts could be infinately expanded upon.

also, is there a limit on how many entries a person can submit?

    • Austin says:

      Hi Sophie,

The winning concept will receive $10,000. It is our goal with this reward to be able to largely remove the winning entrant’s risk of developing an indie game. With this challenge, we’re hoping to attract developers who have passionately wanted to create a game of their own, but have not had the time, or were unwilling to sacrifice such an opportunity cost.

We recognize that many developers work part-time, or in their spare time, so we intentionally left some details vague. Given the wide variety of potential game concepts, its difficult to say what qualifies completion, and how long that might take. We intend to work closely with the winning developer to decide the scope and timeline of the game to be completed. Although there is no contractual way of saying this, we plan to be reasonable and accommodating. It is the winning developer and their concept that will guide development. The Muse team will simply serve as enablers, offering as much help and guidance as is requested.

To your second question – there is no limit on the number of entries.

I hope that answers your questions, I look forward to your submissions!

Is necessary to buy the Unity3d engine?
Can we use the trial version?

  3. Don Fields says:

When the winner is selected and begins to work for Muse Games do they have to relocate to New York, New York or can they remain where they live and have a remote employment with Muse Games?

    • Austin says:

Of course they can work remotely! I’d even hesitate to call it “employment.” It’s more like Muse Games will be employed by the winner in hopes of creating the winner’s game!

  4. Chaotic Heart Studios says:

I applaud Muse Games for giving indie developers this amazing opportunity. It is perfect for those just starting up, or those who cannot simply “risk it all” with no guarantee of reward at the end.

I do have a question, though. From what I understand, the game, once developed, will be exclusive to Muse Games for a time period of a year. I am fine with that. You paid 10,000 for that exclusivity. What I want to know, is does that cover the code used in the game as well as the game, itself… or just the game?

To clarify, what I am inquiring is if the developer can re-use the code he used in the exclusive game on a different title during that 1 year exclusivity? Naturally, not to make an exact copy or even a close clone of the exclusive game… but there is always re-usable code from any developmental cycle that can be modified to fit even completely different games.

We, at Chaotic Heart Studios, are working on a bite-sized RPG/Arena combat style game for the contest. With that said, we also have a few other RPG projects in the works. They are all different… or as different as one RPG can be from another… but the code itself for things like the real-time/turn based combat system is pretty much the same. Would this cause a problem with the exclusivity clause for the contest?

Once again, serious kudos to everyone at Muse Games for doing this. You did not have to. The fact that you did shows great style and conviction.

We’ll do our best to work with the winner to come to a mutually beneficial arrangement. In other words we are flexible.

Technically speaking, exclusivity does cover all assets. Practically speaking, we’re interested in the assets that make the game unique. We’d have to go on a case by case basis for this sort of thing – feel free to shoot an email to contest@musegames.com and we can discuss your needs and concerns individually.
